Day 4 (04 Sept 2015)

Hike

That's first time to went to close the volcano but many time to went to the community in the forest. When I went to that place, I found some relationship between the circle of mountain river city and the ocean. That’s context of the nature. People from different place in this circle learning and develop their life to merged with nature. So I interested in the house in Turgo community because that was a vernacular architecture, They used local material to construct their house. So they create some innovation to develop the local material to stronger than generally. I can’t found this structure in other country, Because this’s the local innovation from people who learning with this situation. When we walked around this community, I found the zoning about housing farmer and forest. In my opinion that’s a great way to live with the nature and they weren’t made a problem to the environment like the life in the city. And how to find the way for people in city to live with nature.

I got up at 6 in the morning although I went to bed at around 1 am, the previous night. We had a plan to hike around Merapi volcanic mountain at Turgo village. After having a cup of hot ginger tea, our crew was ready with their boots, cameras and whatever was necessary for hiking. We followed our guide downhill exploring different plants on our way. One thing that amazed me was really thick stem of bamboo grasses. I had only seen bamboos with very thin stem in my home country, Nepal. Unfortunately, after 30 minutes of walk in the dusty road our guide informed us that we won't be able to see volcanic mountain because of unclear climate. We, then planned to return back through different way. We had to climb uphills in most of our way back which was the fun part of hiking for me.

Before sunrise it was cold.He came, our guide, and he read a short prayer, and we moved on. I thought that we climb up into the mountains, but we went down and he showed us a new way, a place where the lava came, and the plant is compressed by touching. Places he showed us was very interesting, with the fog it looked cinematic, wanted to make an episode for the film. We could not see because of the clouds of Merapi. On the way back we met a junior school pupils. Even there I saw graffiti MG 0959.JPG

Design thinking meeting about methods, small group

The design thinking session was led by Nam Taan, Kah Wei, Szu Ni, Lily and Tayzar. This brought together the research knowledge and the product design experience of Nam Taan and Tayzar simultaneously. A general practice in a scientific research would follow the underlying process

Introduction (Problem Statement) -> Hypothesis -> Method -> Experiment -> Data Collection -> Discussion/Sharing -> Conclusion

The simple product design cycle would consist of the following steps Need -> Idea -> Prototype

Combine the two process and we get a list of steps that we choose to follow for our research and prototyping work

Design thinking meeting about methods, large group

The first step in meeting we think about the information that we want to know for support the hypothesis by brainstorm. We have conclusion about the type of information such as Chemical, Bacteria, Physical, and large system to work. I suggest some idea about the the method to measure the visibility of water by use a simple object put in the water and measure the dimension of object to water surface by we can see this object. The process of microbiological laboratory by classifier the bacteria by selected agar. And the idea about how to collect the data to large scale and we can analyze the relationship between many information. From this process we can find the cause of problem in water from other site. And comparison between many place in different context. In my opinion I relate to the experience from this morning about the relationship of nature,river and city. This button up process have potential to develop to be a big project so worked by local people.

Research and ideation small group session

In evening my team plan to find some information to prove our idea at noon, I interest in 2 topic about the way to measure bacteria in the water and the software to drive our hardware. At first time I search the information or report from department of Health in other country. I discover the type of bacteria that dangerous to the people. For Example E.coli, S. aureus, Salmonara etc. And focus to some type for create the tools. Next I discover the information about selected Agar, that’s bacteria food so specific to the type of bacteria and ingredient of this Agar.

I think the hardware should work with software to drive the hardware and project. I remember to the story of Dr. John Snow. He was a doctor in London. Around 1854 in London have a lot of patient from “Cholera”. Dr.Snow used the process to put the location of patient’s house in the map. And he analyzed the relationship between group of patient house. He found the cause of that problem from water pump in the board. He told the people stop to used water from that pump. And a number of patient decrease. That’s the origin of GIS. In my opinion this a good process and good story to learn. I have some idea about build all measurement tools in a bag (like Jame Bond’s bag) and share this bag to students in school around Yogyakarta. And made this to be a “Game” ( or in name “Dr.John Snow Association Game) by use this concept to design the package to persuade the children. When the children come home and use this kit to measure the water and learning about “science, History” and share in formation in the school by post the information in the large map. And build some process for teacher use to teach the children about the problem. I think the problem of urbanize is the people don’t know the future or master plan of the city. If we can persuade the children to think about the future on their city and when they grow up they will have a passion to think and develop their city by “SCIENCE”

We adjusted our thinking and designing process before and then we separated in our groups to focus about ‘method’ of ‘hypothesis’

Problem How can we reduce the water pollution?

Hypothesis ‘If we can purify water so people will be healthy’.

Methods

Idea was about ‘people should be able to test if the water is dirty before they will purify the water’. Then, what is the definition of dirty water? The dirty water in our thinking means to water that contaminated with bacteria which can cause illness or diseases. In our method, we focused on testing the coliform bacteria because they are a commonly used bacterial indicator for water.

One of equipments that used to measure the bacteria is TDS meter. Moreover, because of the coliform bacteria are aerobic type which use oxygen to decompose foods so we think about measure BOD value (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) by color changing of indicator (titration).

Our group came up with a list of questions:

  • How many rivers are in Jogja
  • Importance of the rivers (community, nature)
  • How IPAL waste management (Indonesian waste water filters in the river) is solved (where and when)
  • Do the big chemical factories filter their waste water
  • Mindset of people; is IPAL project motivating village people to throw less garbage into the rivers
  • What is the function of rivers (animal, fish, people, plants)
  • Relation between river and well. How polluted river water affects the well water


After brainstorming we came up with different solutions to detect bacteria in the water:

  • grow bacteria in petri glass using agar-agar. add glucose (only some of the bacteria eats glucose) and PH detector to measure how much acidic or basic the environment will become thanks to the gasses what are released by the bacteria. This should help us to distinguish one bacteria from the other.
  • to detect chemicals we need to use other chemicals what reacts with other
  • also we came up with a tool kit idea to share with schools. it should include equipment to detect bacteria in the water and booklet with magnified images of common bacterias
  • for collecting the data we think it would be good to use digital map what everyone can use to check and add data from different areas.

Categories - start from the beginning with instructions for categories for this and future events. Organize experiences by day and then by event within the day, each person writes about their experience within the event.
